Tom Borthwick '51 Awarded 2004 Distinguished Alumnus Award by Cornell

At the 2004 Fraternity Sorority Awards, Brother Tom Borthwick '51 was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award by Vice President Susan Murphy. Tom was cited for his remarkable support of DKE at Cornell, including his ongoing furniture program.

In his letter to Tom (see text below), Don Weadon '67, our Alumni Chairman, noted that "few Dekes have contributed so much effort and soul to the care and improvement of our Gray Stone Castle," and thanked Tom for his many efforts, among which is a new stained-glass accented door to DKE which is being installed.

All alumni are urged to write to Tom or to e-mail him your congratulations at cabinetm2@earthlink.net.

Re: 2004 Cornell Distinguished Alumni Service Award

Dear Tom:

On April 24th at the Fraternity and Sorority Awards Ceremony, you were awarded the Cornell Distinguished Alumni Service Award for all of your great work in support of DKE at Cornell.

As we, your brothers, have said in the past, your contributions to the growth and beauty of our remarkable institution on the Cornell Campus (now in its 135th year) have been without peer. And the University has agreed with us. As noted in its criteria statement, the award is given annually to a Cornell alumnus or alumna who has shown an outstanding commitment to the Greek community by taking an active volunteer role in supporting our chapters both through time and resources. The recipients were chosen whose contributions to our community have left lasting impressions on our student leaders.

In her presentation at the ceremony, Ms. Marrie Neumer, speaking on behalf of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs noted:

"The next alumnus has taken great pride in the growth and development of his chapter. Actively working on the Alumni Association to assist in the restoration of the chapter facility to its original beauty. Over the last few years this Alumnus has personally handcrafted many of the furnishings in Delta Kappa Epsilon Lodge. Please join me in presenting Tom Borthwick with the award for Distinguished Service."

Tom, we at your alumni association and your fellow Board members could not agree more. You should have received a letter from Lennon N. Jackson, Assistant Dean of Students further praising your efforts.

In sum, a job well done. I wanted to share these sentiments while forwarding you the award to join the many others you have on the wall of your study in beautiful Pinehurst.

Until we see one another again (or chat on June 12th on the Board meeting teleconference), I convey our thanks and best regards to you and Jo, and remind you to daily keep your head down and keep your eye on the ball!

In the bonds,

Donald Alford Weadon, Jr. '67
Chairman and President
